HLA Online (web-based version)
  • Internet connection
  • Web browser (Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, etc.)
  • Log-in, no download required.
HLA Desktop (add-in to Word)
  • Microsoft Word for Windows XP/2002 through 2021 running on a Windows PC desktop (or in Windows on a Mac).
  • All versions of Windows through Windows 11, 32- or 64-bit, are supported.
  • Download required, IT assistance may be needed.

HLA Online:
  • Yes, with an Internet connection and a web browser (Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, etc.)
HLA Desktop:
  • Yes. The HLA Desktop, an add-in to Microsoft Word for Windows, will run on a Mac with Word using Windows or Parallels, an independent virtual machine program.

Using the HLA Desktop

To prevent this message, you need to tell Word to trust the installed templates.

1. Click the “File” ribbon tab
2. Click “Options” to display the Microsoft Word Options window
3. On the left hand panel, select “Trust Center”
4. On the right hand panel, click the “Trust Center Settings…” button
5. Under the “Macros Settings” section, select the bullet next to “Enable all macros”
6. Click “OK”
7. Exit and restart Word

Close Word. In Windows, click Start > All Programs > Health Literacy Advisor > HLA Configure Current User. Restart Word; the HLA custom toolbar button should now be available in Word.

 

If you are running Word XP/2002 or 2003, look for a new Word toolbar that, like any Word toolbar, can be floating or can be dragged and docked at the top of the Word window panel:

If you are running Word 2007 or later, look on the Add-Ins tab for a new Custom Toolbar:

Registration and License

Start Word and click on the Health Literacy Advisor toolbar button. Click on the Help button at the bottom of the Control Center:

Click on the Register button and the bottom of the Help screen to enter the User Name and Key Code you were given when you purchased your license:

So that's: Word -> Health Literacy Advisor -> Help -> Register

Click on link provided and the green “Register” button:

 

1. Create a user name and password
2. Accept the Terms and Conditions

 

HLI will then activate your account and will send a confirmation e-mail

A user can only be logged into one device at a time. Please log out of the device you are not using.

You can use the HLA Online on one device at a time.

 

Each HLI license (the HLA Online and Desktop) grants one license to one user. To use the HLA Desktop on both your laptop and your PC you will need two licenses. For more information about our licensing policy, please read our EULA
